Golden State Warriors notebook: Agent confirms trade for Indiana Pacers swingman Brandon Rush

Even though the Warriors would not confirm it Sunday, all indications are that they have acquired swingman Brandon Rush from the Indiana Pacers for forward Lou Amundson.

A club announcement is expected Monday, but there won't be much suspense. Mark Bartelsen, the agent for both players, confirmed the trade, while Rush himself made several acknowledgments of the deal via Twitter. Amundson, meanwhile, was not at the Warriors' practice facility Sunday.

"I can't comment on Lou and Brandon, or what have you," said Warriors coach Mark Jackson after practice. "At the appropriate time, I will."

Bartelsen, on the other hand, not only called the Rush-Amundson swap a done deal, but he had plenty to say about it.

"This is a great fit for both guys," the agent told The Associated Press. "The Pacers have been talking about this for quite a while. I really appreciate (team president) Larry Bird and (general manager) David Morway for trying to find a good home for Brandon. Brandon is a really talented guy who needs to play.''

The 6-foot-6 Rush averaged 8.9 points and 3.6 rebounds in three seasons with the Pacers but was deemed expendable when Paul George emerged as an Indiana starter and the team added guard George Hill in a draft-day trade.

The Warriors, meanwhile, suddenly had a glut of big men and a much greater need for veteran backcourt help off the bench now that Reggie Williams and Acie Law are no longer on the roster.

Rush, 26. is entering his fourth NBA season. After a glittering career at Kansas, where he led the Jayhawks to the NCAA title as a junior, he was the 13th pick in the 2008 draft by the Portland Trail Blazers. Rush was subsequently traded to the Pacers along with Jarrett Jack and Josh McRoberts for Jerryd Bayless and Ike Diogu.

He sounded excited about the trade that will bring him to the Warriors, where he could lighten the load of starting shooting guard Monta Ellis, who led the NBA in minutes played last season. Since Rush also can play small forward, he gives Jackson more lineup flexibility.

"I'm just happy to go somewhere I can play," Rush said via Twitter. "I would like to thank (team owners) the Simon family, Larry Bird, David Morway and the Pacers organization for three great years."

Rush also gives Golden State added long-range shooting. In his three seasons with the Pacers, he shot 40.2 percent from beyond the 3-point arc. He made 93 of 223 3-pointers last season, and his 41.7 percent accuracy was 15th best in the NBA.

Rush does come to Golden State with some baggage. He was suspended for the first five games last season after violating the NBA's substance abuse policy. He was also involved in a social media controversy earlier this month when expletive-filled remarks appeared on his Twitter page that included a homosexual slur.

Rush has maintained that his account was hacked.

The trade of Amundson improves the odds of 20-year-old big man project Jeremy Tyler making the roster as opposed to being assigned to the Warriors' Developmental League team in Bismarck, N.D.

The 6-10, 260-pound Tyler also improved his stock in Jackson's eyes against Sacramento on Saturday night with 11 productive minutes in which he contributed a basket, four rebounds and a block.

"I was concerned going in -- rookie who didn't have a whole week of training camp," Jackson said. "I didn't know what to expect. But I couldn't have been happier with his energy and his effort. He made one crucial mistake taking the ball out of bounds and turning the ball over, but other than that, he played with force, ran the floor and went after the basketball. I was very pleased."

Tyler expressed reservations after Saturday night's game about the possibility of being assigned to the D-League.

"If he plays the way he did last night, it won't matter what number he is as far as big guys, he'll find his way onto the floor," Jackson said. "If he continues to get better, he won't have to worry about leaving this team."

The Warriors did make some official moves, waiving Gary Flowers, Julian Khazzouh, Tim Pickett and Tommy Smith. The club now has 16 players on its roster.
