Warriors' Stephen Curry doubtful against Heat

Here come the Miami Heat in all their three-ring, headline-grabbing glory. So were the Warriors fidgeting in anticipation Thursday as they eyed tonight's encounter with LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh? Not exactly.

Golden State was uncommonly busy after returning home from its empty road trip. The Warriors sent one point guard (Stephen Curry) for an MRI exam on his troublesome ankle, added another point guard (Acie Law) to the roster and prepared to unveil their No. 1 draft choice (Ekpe Udoh).

Curry was listed as doubtful for tonight's game after the MRI revealed a recurrence of his sprained right ankle. He was essentially carried off the court Wednesday night in San Antonio, and he later limped out of the arena wearing a protective walking boot.

So the Warriors (8-14) face the unappealing prospect of meeting LeBron and Co. without their point guard and floor leader. That clearly hurts, but it doesn't diminish the entertainment value of Miami's only visit to the Bay Area this season.

That means James barreling toward the basket, Wade doing his thing and Bosh matching low-post games with David Lee. The Heat (15-8) aren't quite the roving soap opera they were two weeks ago - a six-game winning streak tends to quiet critics - but they're still the NBA's marquee early-season show.

This mix - hot Heat, wobbly Warriors (10 losses in 11 games), no Curry - suggests impending defeat, but coach Keith Smart seems eager to give it a whirl.

"We're going to toss it up, and we're going to play," Smart said after his team's midafternoon practice Thursday. "They have two of the best players in the game (James and Wade) as far as attacking the rim. We've got to make sure they don't get there anytime they want.

"We need to make sure our energy level is high and we execute, because you can't stop those guys - you don't have a game plan for them. They're the top of the league."

Dorell Wright certainly is looking forward to tonight's game. Wright spent the first six seasons of his career in Miami, where he grew so close to Wade that Wright named his son Devin Quentin Dwyane Wade Wright, and Wade is the child's godfather.

Wright left the Heat before he could play alongside James and Bosh, mostly because he sought playing time and a chance to expand his game with the Warriors. He's averaging 14.9 points and 6.0 rebounds, all while biding his time for Dec. 10 on the calendar.

"I've been waiting a long time for this game," Wright said.

He figures to draw the imposing defensive assignment against James and his rock-solid, 6-foot-8, 250-pound frame. Wright joked that he's "down 80 pounds" to James, though Wright is listed at 6-9 and 205.

James, after some early struggles, is finding his groove: He scored 33 points in Miami's victory Wednesday night in Utah.

"They have different weapons now, so it's not going to be LeBron-LeBron-LeBron the way it was in Cleveland," Wright said. "We just got to keep him out of the paint and make him take tough shots. That's my main goal.

"I just can't let him get into my body. I have to contain him, keep him at arm's distance, close out and contest his shots."

It sounded sensible enough, but even the best-laid plans can crumble when James shows up - especially on national television, with the Heat building momentum and the Warriors in full retreat after their 6-2 start.

"It's a great opportunity to play against one of the most talked-about teams in the league," Law said. "It will be a lot of fun."

Heat finally hot
