Hawks hope a significant deal wakes them up out of their slumber when they return to the hardwood against the Golden State Warriors tonight.
The Hawks, who are fifth in the Eastern Conference but have lost five of six games, dealt veteran point guard Mike Bibby, Jordan Crawford, Maurice Evans and a 2011 first-round pick to Washington for guard Kirk Hinrich and forward Hilton Armstrong just hours before their latest setback in Phoenix on Wednesday.
Channing Frye scored 20 points, including a pair of key jumpers at the end of the game in that one to give Phoenix a 105-97 victory.
Josh Smith notched 26 points and six rebounds as the Hawks dropped their third straight contest overall. Jamal Crawford had 19 points while Al Horford added 17 points and nine rebounds in the loss.
"I think they just made some key plays down the stretch and we didn't get key stops when we needed to win," Smith said. "The game went their way in that case. You've just got to give them credit. It was one of those games, I was happy with our team's effort in the second half and I wish we would have maintained throughout the game."
The 32-year-old Bibby had clearly lost a step at both ends of the floor while backup Jeff Teague has failed to impress in limited minutes, leaving the door open for Hinrich, a solid two-way player.
"We have been searching for a point guard, someone who can come in and run this club," Hawks coach Larry Drew said. "Kirk brings toughness at that position. He is a heady guy, a smart guy and can make shots, all the tangibles we were looking for."
The Warriors, meanwhile, lost for the first time in four games on Tuesday in Oakland when Kevin Garnett finished with a game-high 24 points to go along with 12 rebounds and six assists, as the Celtics used a strong second half to top Golden State, 115-93.
Dorell Wright paced Golden State with 19 points while Stephen Curry added 18. David Lee and Monta Ellis scored 17 and 15 points, respectively, in the loss.
The Warriors, who are 4 1/2 games out of the final playoff spot in the West, had their three-game winning streak snapped as well as a six-game run over the Celtics in Oakland.
"At the end of the third quarter...their defensive intensity picked up a lot and we didn't have a rhythm on offense and didn't move the ball like we wanted to coming into the game," Curry said.
Golden State also made a minor trade Wednesday, sending backup forwards Brandan Wright and Dan Gadzuric to New Jersey for veteran Troy Murphy and a 2012 second-round pick. Murphy spent five-plus seasons with the Warriors after being selected 14th overall in the 2001 NBA Draft but the Warriors are expected to buyout his contract.
Atlanta has won two straight over Golden State, including a 103-93 win in Dixie back on Dec. 29.
