Stephen Jackson Receives March NBA Community Assist Award

Warriors Forward Earns Monthly Honor After Taking Part In Several Community Outreach Programs

In recognition of Stephen Jackson’s outstanding efforts in the community and for his ongoing charitable work, the NBA has honored the Golden State Warriors forward with the Community Assist Award for March.

In his first full season with the Warriors, Jackson has made a huge impact in the Oakland community. During the month of March alone, he participated in a Silence the Violence rally, teamed up with Grammy Award-winner John Legend to raise funds for the Show Me Campaign, participated in a groundbreaking for a basketball court, and launched his own foundation.

“I have played in several different cities and countries during my career,” said Jackson. “But one thing will never change: my passion to give back to the community.”

On March 10, Jackson joined the Silence the Violence discussion panel with Oakland Mayor Ronald Dellums at a Bay Area high school. During the two-hour event for hundreds of local youth, Jackson spoke candidly about the challenges he faced growing up with violence in his community and the mistakes he has made in his own life. Following the discussion, many local schools and community organizations reached out to the Warriors to have Jackson visit with their young people.

Later in March, Jackson partnered with John Legend and the Show Me Campaign to raise $50,000 for the organization, which works to prevent poverty around the world. Jackson pledged to donate $500 for every point that he scored during that night’s game. After scoring 15 points, he doubled his $7,500 pledged amount to total $15,000.

Also in March, a groundbreaking took place on a basketball court that Jackson sponsored at the Omega Boys Club in San Francisco. Once completed, the court will provide local children with a safe place to play. The unveiling for the new court is scheduled for April, and the mayor of San Francisco, Gavin Newsom, is declaring April 12th, Stephen Jackson Day in the city of San Francisco.

Jackson also recently launched his foundation, the Jack 1 Foundation, based in his hometown of Port Arthur, Texas. This summer he is opening the Stephen Jackson Academy, a school also based in Port Arthur, for students ranging from kindergarten to fifth grade.

Jackson will receive the David Robinson Plaque, with the inscription, “Following the standard set by NBA Legend David Robinson who improved the community piece by piece.” In addition to the plaque, a $5,000 donation will be given to the Jack 1 Foundation on Jackson’s behalf.

The league presents the NBA Community Assist Award monthly to recognize players for their charitable efforts. The award honors the NBA player who reflects the passion that the league and its players have for giving back to their communities.
