Should the Golden State Warriors Bring Back Keith Smart Next Season?

When Don Nelson and the Warriors parted ways before this season began I was a happy man. Sorry to all you Nelson fans out there but I don’t like his style. It’s fun to watch but it’s not the kind of system that wins championships. All offense and no defense is not championship basketball. Needless to say when they handed over the team to Nelson’s main assistant coach Keith Smart I was none too happy. The Warriors basically traded Don Nelson for a Don Nelson with none of the experience.

I was happy to hear that Smart was going to try and implement some defense this season. And there have been times this year where the Warriors actually looked like they were playing defense. But unfortunately that is not often enough. Who do I blame for that though? If the players are playing it sometimes does that mean Smart is trying to get them to do it all the time but they are too stuck in Nelson’s ways? Or does it mean Smart forgets to push defense as much as he should? My guess it is a little of both. I am sure if Smart was really preaching it you would see more defensive effort than what has been given. But at the same time these are grown men who have been playing basketball for their entire lives, they know how to play defense. I love defense and the lack of it coming from the Warriors this seasons gives Smart strike one in my book.

Keith Smart has been given strike two from me because of offense as well. The Warriors seem to run very few offensive sets. There are way too many isolation plays going on. Every time Monta Ellis gets the ball you just see players clear out. Maybe that isn’t the worst thing in the world but the problem is every one stands around until Monta puts his shot up. Guys at least need to be cutting to the basket to trying to get open. I also don’t understand why the Warriors don’t live on the pick and roll. They have an amazing young point guard in Stephen Curry and a power forward with a legit jump shot in David Lee. Those two should be able to run it to perfection. But you hardly see it run. This is the NBA and teams need systems to run otherwise offenses are going to get stagnate. Smart has clearly done a poor job implementing an offensive system. He like Nelson relies too much on the run and gun.

So one more strike and Smart is out, right? Right. So here it comes. Strike two and a half? Yeah. I couldn’t give this next strike all to coach Smart. I basically was going to tear him a new one for his terrible job with substitutions. Smart does a very poor job in this aspect of running his team. He doesn’t really have the same group of guys he goes to game in and game out. Playing time fluctuates between a lot of the players. Acie Law seems to be the back up point guard but other than that you never know who Smart is going to send in at what time. I can’t totally blame Smart for this because his bench is very weak at best. The Warriors don’t really have a player with sixth man type talent to come in off the bench and help out the team. So I can understand Smart’s constant change in his rotation. But he also continues to pull a young player like Ekpe Udoh for a player like Andris Biendrins in critical situations and the problem with that move is Udoh has been better than Biedrins. He seems to like his veterans more than his young players and that has hurt the team a lot. In no way should Law be playing that many minutes over Jeremy Lin. Both are bad players but Lin has an opportunity to get better. Law already is what he is. So I can only give Smart a half strike on this topic.
Two and a half strikes and you are out? I know it’s not the rule but that is what I am going with. Even though he still has a half strike left Keith Smart needs to go at the end of the season. He had a chance to save his job when the Warriors were still with in sniffing distance of that last playoff spot but now that the Warriors are sinking fast it’s time for the Warriors to look else where. I believe Lacob and Guber should just cut ties and clean house. Let’s bring in new everything and give this team a fresh start. Sorry Keith Smart but you are out.
